Background:Antifungal therapy is the second most common therapeutic class in the world and remains one of the most studied drugs in dermatology, due to its effectiveness in the treatment of fungal infections. However, the use of systemic antifungal therapy is controversial. In Malaysia, two different drugs, terbinafine and clotrimazole, have been used to treat fungal infections of the skin (tinea capitis and ringworm), but they differ in their mechanism of action. One of them is known as a drug-free topical cream, and the other is known as a topical drug-free cream. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of terbinafine and clotrimazole in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin.

Methods:This study was performed in two parts: first part of the study, we investigated the effect of terbinafine on dermatophyte fungal infections of the skin (tinea capitis, ringworm and candida albicans). The study was conducted in the clinic of the University Medical Center (Malaysia) of Singapore, Singapore, in a two-year period, from January 2010 to December 2011. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (terbinafine group) received terbinafine cream and group 2 (clotrimazole group) received clotrimazole cream.

Results:The results show that the use of terbinafine cream, terbinafine cream and clotrimazole cream was significantly higher in the terbinafine group compared to the group treated with the respective drugs. The terbinafine group had a significantly higher rate of the infections than the groups treated with the respective drugs. The mean duration of fungal infections was 1.9 years in the terbinafine group and 1.6 years in the clotrimazole group. No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups for the duration of the infections. The most common fungal infections were ringworm and candida albicans.

Conclusion:This study shows that terbinafine cream, terbinafine cream and clotrimazole are highly effective in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin.
